Editors Note:
After a long period of service, this will be my last issue as editor of Baptist Freedom. Joe Kutter, a past president of the Roger Williams Fellowship, will be the new editor.
We are in a battle with “the principalities and powers” for the very soul of American Baptist Churches. William H. Herzogs address to the RWF banquet at Denver outlines the theological grounds for this battle. The church has always lived in the tension between Law and Gospel. I urge you to read this issue as we are in a battle for the right of each of each of us to study the Scripture and collectively discern the will of God.
In our history, we have had many splits and they have all come from the apostles of discord who wish to dictate their reading of the Bible on churches that disagree with them. From the very beginning, Baptists have had a strong witness both to following Scripture and to soul freedom. That is a tension that we live with; but, it is also the glory of the Gospel.
